Expert training provided to Khartoum state central ambulance service in mechanical ventilation

The Al Awasi International Training Center held a two-day course on portable mechanical ventilation for pre-hospital providers in the central ambulance service in Khartoum, Sudan. The course was attended by 24 participants from the Khartoum central ambulance service. It was delivered by the Al Awasi team of trainers and included practical training.

The demand for mechanical ventilation has increased due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Mechanical ventilation allows for precise control of ventilation, particularly in areas where it takes longer to transport patients. Understanding basic respiratory physiology and ventilator settings is essential to start mechanical ventilation safely and correct the underlying respiratory derangement. Improper ventilator management not only can worsen the acute disease process but also sets off an inflammatory cascade causing worse lung injury.

In order to increase their capacity and improve the quality of their services, the central ambulance service partnered with Al Awasi who provided them with a training course on how to use mechanical ventilation in a safe way during transportation and how to manage patients who require it during transport.

The central ambulance service was established in 1996 to provide the service of patient transportation. Their ambulances are distributed throughout 17 different stations in Khartoum State, and they do more than 1500 transports per month mostly free of charge. Some of those patients are in critical condition and need mechanical ventilation during transportation; using mechanical ventilation for inter-hospital transfer allows for precise control of ventilation, particularly in areas where it takes longer to transport patients.
